The Sol Plaatje University (SPU) Centre for Entrepreneurship & Rapid Incubator (CfERI) in Upington has as its main focus, the entrepreneurial development of youth/ students in the ZF Mgcawu District, as well as a secondary focus on the incubation of start-up and new SMME’s run by entrepreneurs of all ages. The Centre (CfERI) is the brainchild of the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD). The Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) is the implementing agency for DSBD.

The CfERI was launched in 2017 as a result of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between DSBD and the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), signed in 2016. The MoA provided that VUT would play a governance and support role, whilst DSBD would provide core operational and SMME development funding. The CfERI however transitioned to the Sol Plaatje University (SPU) from 01 June 2021.

The main purpose of the Centre is SMME development, job creation and youth development. In addition to this, preference is currently also given to black, rural, disabled, and female development. Services are provided essentially within the Dawid Kruiper municipal area but are extended to the entire ZF Mgcawu district.
